”Missä on lapsi, joka olin
yhä
minussa vai jo poissa?”
Lauantaiaamuna aamupalan
suuntasivat lomalleen Santiagosta pohjoiseen. Meitä jäi siis paikalle neljä
henkilöä: Sirpa, Raija, Pirjo ja minä. Me neljä kävimme kaupassa ostamassa
evästä ja lähdimme piknikille Santiagon pohjoisosassa sijaitsevalle Cerro San Cristobalin
kukkulalle.

”Where is the child I used to be
still within me or
already gone?”
Saturday morning after the
breakfast Laya and Päivi started their long return journey, Markku and Elina
went north from Santiago for their own holidays so there were only four of us
left to explore the sights of Santiago for another three days.
We had decided to go to
Cerro San Cristobal hill on the north side of Santiago. It’s a popular picnic
destination and as it was a public holiday, we knew there’d be plenty of
people. So we first went to a shop to buy some snacks and wine and then hailed
a taxi to Bella Vista. We first had a quick look at the nearby street were a
lot of street vendors had set up their stalls selling usual tourist souveniers.
There were a couple of entrepreneurs with llamas offering a short ride for
kids. But what caught my eye the most were the paintings on the walls of the
buildings. Some of them were fantastic.
We had intended to take the
cable car up the hill, walk around there, have a picnic and then descend to the
other side of the hill by foot. This plan did not work out as the cable car was
under repairs – that wouldn’t take us anywhere.
For a while we were not
quite sure what to do. It was a long way up and the midday sun reminded me of
the saying: “Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.” In the end
we decided to be part of one of these groups as we saw so many others either
coming down or going up the road. First it was a paved road and except for the
heat, the walking was pleasant. Then we saw a sign saying that there was a
short cut up along a path and the distance was less than 2 km or alternatively
we could keep on walking along the road but the distance would then be more
than 5 km. Up the path we went.
Well, I have to say that I
didn’t really enjoy the walk up. We tried to have breaks every now and then but
there were not that many trees or any other things that would give as
possibilities to rest in a shade. Walking up the mountain (yes, I know, I said
a hill first) was also hard for the muscles and breathing became more labored.
Anyway, we made it and once on the top, it looked really nice; green grass and
plenty of trees giving protection from the sun. We went to one free spot and
had some sandwiches and wine to give our bodies some new energy.
After a while, Raija and
Pirjo decided to walk to a nearby statue of Virgin Mary. Sirpa and I had had
enough of walking and so we started to practice Sirpa’s lines in our school’s
Christmas play. It was quite a strange feeling to practice a Christmas play
when the temperature was about +30 C.
When Raija and Pirjo
returned, we started thinking how to go back down the hill. We saw a long line
of people queuing up for buses going down. So we joined the queue and after
about 40 minutes waiting we managed to get in a bus. It took us to the other
side of the hill where we had started the climb and this was actually within a
walking distance from our hotel.
After coming back to the
hotel, I didn’t feel like going anywhere else so I mainly stayed in my room
watching TV for the rest of the evening.
