Chile 5.12.12

Keskiviikko 5.12. 2012

”Tiedätkö, kumpi on vaikeampaa

”Do you know, which is more difficult for a grain

to grow or drop its seeds?

On Wednesday we started at 11.00 as we had agreed. It was good to be able to sleep a bit longer in the morning and then have a lazy breakfast and sleep some more. Leonor took us to the bus depo, bought the tickets and said that there was someone from the university waiting for us at the bus station of Valparaiso.

Florida Hill, Valparaiso

The road to the coast went over the hills between Santiago and the sea and the nature only started to get greener once the road went down from the hills. Just before reaching the coastal trip, the vegetation changed remarkably. The trip took about 1,5 hours and the bus was comfortable.

Florida Hill, Valparaiso

The guide from the university, Victor was waiting for us and asked what we wanted to see. We were all keen to see Pablo Neruda’s house in Valparaiso so we took a local bus. It soon started to climb up along the winding roads of the Florida hill.

Neruda had two other houses in Chile, one in Santiago and the other in Isla Negra along with this one in Valparaiso, which is called La Sebastiana. The house has five stories and nowadays it’s a museum. Neruda bought it in 1961 and named it after the previous owner Sebastian Collado. It is on the higher elevations of the Florida Hill and from the courtyard and all floors there’s a great view of the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately cameras were not allowed indoors. Inside there was plenty of Neruda memorabilia and his furniture. The building itself is narrow and the rooms small.

From Neruda’s house we walked down a steep hill leading to the shore. The view and some of the houses were very picturesque but going downhill was hard for some usually unused muscles.

I didn’t become an afficionado of Chilean food during my trip. It wasn’t bad but I just think that after 20 years in Asia my taste buds are too accustomed to herbs and spices and most of the food I ate was rather bland. The food I had in a seaside restaurant in Valparaiso was one of the better ones. They have a typical lunch thing called menu. It usually consists of salad and/or soup, main course and dessert as was the case in this one. I tried it and have to say it was filling and the soup was quite tasty. Maybe I should have tried more soups. Yet again, it wasn’t bad, just bland, the rest of it, I mean.

After the meal most of the group went up the hill again, this time with a cable car. Raija and I decided to stay in the city centre to see some of Unesco world heritage list buildings. In this area there were no markets which would have been interesting but the buildings did look nice. We had agreed to meet the others in a square nearby and when we reached it, there was just enough time for a Pisco. This turned out to be the best one I had and left me hoping there was more time for another.

However, we had to go to meet the others and then we took a bus to see one of the best beaches in this area in Vina del Mar, which is Valparaiso’s twin city. It took only about 20 minutes to get there and we walked to the beach. Some of us wanted to dip their toes or feet in the sea but I just stayed and gazed at the Pacific. It had been four and half years since I last saw it and that was on the other side of the ocean, Thailand. The sea water in the area never really warms up. This is because the cold Humbold current flows past Chile and keeps the sea always cool even when the air temperature is +30 C.

Vina del Mar beach

Finally after spending some time on the beach, Victor took us to a local pub near the bus station, where we had our night caps. The atmosphere was quite interesting as the first leg of the Chilean football final was on TV.

A real cowboy?

We arrived at Santiago at around 10 p.m. and went to the hotel with the last metro. Everyone went straight to bed, no pool party tonight as we had an early morning visit to the third school visit ahead of us.
