”Miksi pyörremyrskyjä kutsutaan

                      silloin, kun ne ovat paikoillaan?”

Kolmas kouluvierailu oli hyvin samankaltainen kahden ensimmäisen kanssa. Meidät otettiin ystävällisesti vastaan ja henkilökunta esitteli koulua ennen kuin siirryimme seuraamaan matematiikan ongelmaratkaisutuntia. Lopuksi näimme vielä oppilaiden tekemän projektin Chilen kulttuurista ja historiasta. Aamupäivä vierähti kouluvierailulla ja koska illalla oli vierailu opettajien projektiin liittyvän kokouksen merkeissä, menimme hotellimme lähelle ja söimme lounaat siellä. Sitten hetki lepäilyä huoneissa jonka jälkeen palaveriin.

Opettajien tunteja esiteltiin videoilta, aivan kuin meilläkin tehdään. Suurin ero chileläisten ja meidän välillä on se, että heille on annettu tarkat ohjeet siitä, kuinka tunnit tulisi toteuttaa ja myös tavoitteet tehtävien ratkaisujen suhteen. Meillähän yksittäiset opettajat toteuttavat tunnin omien suunnitelmiensa mukaan ja mitään yhteisiä tavoitteita ei ole vaan tutkijat seuraavat oppilaiden tuotoksien kehittelyä ja lopputuloksia. Kuten aikaisemmin totesin eroista maiden opetuksen välillä, tästä käsittelystäkin ilmenee ne samat erot.

Virallisen tapaamisen jälkeen meillä oli vapaa-aikaa ja keskustelua mutta, koska me emme osanneet Layaa lukuun ottamatta espanjaa eivätkä isäntämme Leonaria lukuun ottamatta englantia, keskustelut jäivät vähiin.

Meidän mukana ollut projektin edustaja professori Markku Hannula piti puheen ja sen lopuksi ilmoitti, että tänään on Suomen itsenäisyyspäivä. Tämän kuultuaan chileläiset halusivat kuulla meidän laulavan kansallislaulumme ja ennen sitä jaoin kaikille Lehikoisen Ismon mukaan antamat hammastikut, joiden päissä oli Suomen lippu. Lauloimme Maammelaulun ja pian tämän jälkeen opettajat alkoivat poistua paikalta, sillä heillä oli vielä seuraavana päivänä työpäivä. He kutsuivat meidät seuraavana iltana kanssaan ravintolaan illanviettoon mutta päätimme jättää menemättä, koska kommunikointi välillämme oli niin huonoa. Professori Hannula ja hänen vaimonsa Erika menivät tilaisuuteen edustamaan meitä.

Illan päätteeksi palasimme hotellille ja istuimme hetken altaalle keskustelemassa matkan kokemuksista. Perjantai olisi viimeinen projektiin liittyvä päivä, joten nyt oli hyvä aika keskusteluille.

”What is a hurricane called,

                 when it is immobile?”

The third and final school visit was very similar with the previous ones. We were warmly welcomed and shown the school before going to watch the maths class. After that we saw a project done by the school’s older students about Chilean history and culture, very nice. After the school visit we went back to our hotel as we were going to meet the Chilean project participants at 6 p.m. We ate our lunch near the hotel and went to have a rest in our rooms before the meeting.

In the meeting which was similar to the ones we have in Helsinki after the maths class, some teachers'  classes were shown on a screen. The biggest differences seemed to be that the teachers in Chile are given strict instructions what to do in the class and they also have goals for what the students are supposed to achieve in every individual maths project class. In Finland every teacher has free hands to instruct the class as he/she wishes and there are also no given objectives. I suppose this all comes down to the differences between the teachers’ training in these two countries. Something I mentioned before.

After the official part was over, we had free time to chat with each other. However, this was never going to happen as none of us could speak Spanish and none of them could really speak English. So the task to translate every conversation going on would have been too much, even for our super translator Laya.

So nearing the end of the evening professor Markku Hannula who was representing the project leadership of  Finland in our group gave a speech and he also mentioned that it was Finland’s Independence Day. Hearing this the Chileans wanted us to sing our national anthem. Before that I handed out toothpicks which had a Finnish flag (provided by one of our colleagues, Ismo Lehikoinen before our trip) to everyone.

So we sang the song, everyone to the best of their abilities. As the Chilean teachers had a working day ahead, they started leaving. They did invite us to a pub on Friday but the language barrier being what it was, we thought, we’d skip it. Professor Hannula and his wife Erika did oblige, though, which was very nice of them.

So we also headed back to our hotel and sat chatting by the pool for a while about the experiences we had had during the trip. Friday would be the last official day in this excursion and for most of us the official part would only start in the afternoon. Tough things ahead: lunch offered by Mrs. Leonar and a visit to a vineyard.
