”Kuinka kiittää pilviä niiden ohikiitävästä runsaudesta?”

Tiistaina menimme toiselle kouluvierailulle. Alue oli suurin piirtein sama kuin maanantain vierailu mutta nyt oli kyseessä puoliksi yksityinen koulu. Täälläkin seurasimme projektiin liittyvän matematiikan tunnin ja lisäksi yhden kirjastotunnin. Koulu ei tehnyt aivan yhtä suurta vaikutusta kuin ensimmäinen mutta oli kuitenkin mielenkiintoinen vierailupaikka. 

Keskustelimme muutamien opettajien kanssa lopuksi ja he kertoivat, että Chilessä opettajat eivät ole arvostettu ammattikunta. Yleensä opettajiksi päätyvät ne, jotka eivät pääse lukemaan muita aineita. Näin ollen heidän palkkauksensa on myös pieni ja heillä on paljon tarkastajia, jotka katsovat, että tunti- ym. suunnitelmat ovat tehdyt ja että niitä noudatetaan.

Kouluvierailun jälkeen taksit veivät meidät vanhaan keskustaan. Olisin halunnut vierailla museossa, joka kertoi ajasta ennen espanjalaisten saapumista maahan mutta se oli remontissa ja aukeaisi vasta vuoden kuluttua. Pettymys, se olisi ollut todella mielenkiintoinen paikka, sillä tämä oli ensimmäinen vierailuni Etelä-Amerikkaan.

Niinpä päätimme vain hajautua omille teillemme, no naiset pareissa ja minä itsekseni, noin puoleksitoista tunniksi tutkimaan alueen shoppailumestoja. Paikan vanhat ja remontoidut rakennukset sekä niiden väliset kadut olivat täynnä erilaisia pieniä myymälöitä ja paikallisille tarkoitettuja pikaruokapaikkoja. Alueella on ilmeisesti paljon virastoja ja muita työpaikkoja, sillä alkuiltapäivästä ruokalat olivat aivan täysiä. Ainoat ostokset, joita itse tein olivat vesipullo ja hattu suojaamaan päätäni, joka oli alkanut punoittaa Chilen kesäauringon paistaessa suoraan ylhäältä päin.

Tavattuamme lähdimme etsimään ruokapaikkaa ja jälleen se osoittautui hieman vaikeaksi. Lopulta käveltyämme kuumassa auringonpaisteessa melko kauan, huomasimme tulleemme samalle alueelle kuin missä olimme syöneet edellisenä iltana. Hakeuduimme samaan ravintolaan ja tällä kertaa saimme kaikki annokset, mitkä olimme tilanneetkin. Palvelu oli kuitenkin erittäin hidasta, tosin ei se kovin nopeaa ollut missään muuallakaan, joten se jäi viimeiseksi vierailuksi tässä paikassa. Tämä olikin aika tyypillinen juttu koko matkan aikana. Paikkoja, joissa pystyimme vain piipahtamaan hetkeksi, ei juuri ollut. Juomalla käynti ja varsinkin ruokailu vei aina pitkän ajan, ensin piti odottaa, että tilaus otettiin vastaan, sitten tilausta ja lopuksi laskua.

Iltaohjelmassa oli vierailu Chilessä projektia vetävän professori Leonorin kotona, minne hän oli kutsunut meidät illalliselle. Hän asui ylellisellä alueella kerrostaloasunnossa, mistä oli hienot näköalat kaupungille ja Andeille. Ilta vierähti rattoisasti Pisco sourin ja ruokailun merkeissä. Sovimme, että lähdemme seuraavana aamuna Valparaison retkelle vasta alkuaamupäivästä, jotta ehdimme hetken levähtää hotellilla.

”How to thank the clouds for their fleeting abundance?”

Tuesday was our second school visit day. The area where the school is located is about the same as the first one but this one was semi-private school. Here as well as on Monday, we saw a maths lesson which was part of the project and then a library class. The school seemed to be a bit less disciplined but it was also an interesting place to visit and they also were not happy about the inspectors and low salaries that the teachers receive.

After the school visit the taxis took us to the old centre of Santiago. The only museum I was planning to visit was Museum of pre-Colombian times telling about the culture and arts of the indigenous people in the area. Unfortunately it was under renovations and would be closed for about one year. That was a disappointment, particularly as this was my first trip to South-America.

So we decided to walk around the area for about 1,5 hours individually or in small groups, well the ladies went in pairs, I on my own. The old renovated buildings of the area and the streets in between them were all full of small shops and eateries where the locals seemed to be enjoying their lunch in great numbers. There must be plenty of offices and other work places nearby. I wasn’t in the mood for shopping, the only things I bought were a bottle of water and a hat to cover my head from the burning sun.

When we met again, we started to look for a restaurant and yet again, it proved to be more complicated than we had expected. Finally after walking in a hot sunshine, thank god for that hat, we noticed that we were in the same area as previous night. So we went to the same restaurant where we had been the previous night and this time we got all that we ordered. The service was extremely slow, not that it was quick in most of the places we visited but anyway, we didn’t bother to go back to this place any more. What seemed to be a fact during our trip, there was no way to drop in for a quick drink, everything took a long time: for the waiter/waitress to arrive, for them to return back to take their order, for the food and drinks to arrive, for the bill to arrive.

In the evening we visited the professor who is in charge of the project in Chile, Mrs. Leonor. She stayed in a luxurious apartment in a fine area of Santiago and she had ordered some Italian food from a nearby restaurant for us. It was a nice evening and time went fast with food, wine and Piscos. In the end of the evening we decided not to leave too early for Valparaiso the next day.
